The Lizard Charity Car Show was started in 2012 with a vision. A camper, Matt Marriott, at Lebanon Reservoir Campground had a passion for vintage cars and thought it would be a unique area to hold a car show. He selected the first Saturday in August for the event, as this this was the time of year his father passed. He was extremely close to his father, whom also enjoyed antique cars, and thought that this would be a way to pay a personal tribute to his late father. After talking with the owners, they agreed that it would be okay to hold a show there. That summer, the first annual car show was held on the shores on Lebanon Reservoir, where seven cars participated. From there a charity was born.
The next year, it was decided that the along with the car show, we would try to raise some money for a charity. It did not matter how big or small the event was or how much we would rise. The important part was that we are giving back to the community. The Wounded Warriors Project was selected in memory of Matt’s father who was a WWII veteran. In one day with a 50/50 raffle and donations accepted by local businesses, we were able to raise $1800.00. The volunteers thought that this was not bad for 5 hours of work. Since then we have had a charity.
We thought that it would be better to choose a different charity to raise money for every year. That way there we are helping out many in the community and not just one organization. In order for a charity to be picked we look at a lot of criteria. We want to make sure that the money raised is going for the charity, and not administration fees. We work closely with the organization leaders for their input, but most importantly get a sense of what the organization is about.
